YOUR DRUG PLAN
By the way of Vote held in April 2007, the full-time students of Holland College decided on a Student Health Plan to assist and protect all students.
Thanks to your drug plan, you are able to get prescription medication you would otherwise have to pay for out of your own pocket. To get the most of this benefit, it is important to know about how your drug plan works. This will prevent delays at the pharmacy.
The HCSU works in conjunction with The Plan Administrator to manage the Health Plan. The Administrator advises the pharmacy, usually by computer, if your particular prescription is covered by your drug plan. Keep in mind that there are many types of plans and the pharmacists only knows what the computer tells them about your drug plan. They are not provided with all the details of your drug plan.
SHOW YOUR STUDENT ID
Show your student ID to your pharmacist when you hand in your prescription. This is especially important when visiting a pharmacy for the first time.
These cards will be available for pickup at the HCSU Office in mid October. If you don’t have a card, please contact the HCSU and we will assist you.
WHY ARE THE PLANS MANDATORY?
With a mandatory plan, the insurance risk is spread over a larger number of students, thereby lowering the cost per student. This makes the fee in a range that is affordable to students. An individual health plan can cost as much as 2 to 5 times the current student fees.
WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A HEALTH PLAN?
Any student currently on a comparable Extended Health plan from an employer, spouse or parent may coordinate benefit plans or opt-out/waive this plan.
WHAT IS COORDINATION OF BENEFITS?
If you currently have an Extended Health Care plan, you may use both plans to maximize your coverage. Simply claim any eligible expenses through your HCSU Health Plan first. Once you receive your refund and detailed summary, submit the summary along with the appropriate claim form to your other insurer.
CAN I OPT-OUT/WAIVE THE HEALTH PLAN?
Any full-time student on the plan, who has alternate coverage through another provider, may opt-out of the plan. In order to be removed from the plan and have your fee reassessed, you must complete the waiver form (supplied by HCSU and available online after August 15, 2007) and provide proof of your alternate coverage, on or before the third week from the start date of your program.
A plan card, booklet or letter outlining your coverage from your plan provider is all acceptable proof of coverage. This protects you and HCSU from insurance fraud. All information is confidential.
NOTE – THE HEALTH PLAN IS NOT THE SAME AS PROVINCIAL COVERAGE MEDICAL COVERAGE. THIS PLAN IS EXTENDED COVERAGE.
CAN I ADD MY FAMILY TO THE HEALTH PLAN?
Any full-time student on the Student Health plan may add their dependant(s) to the plan, for an additional fee, during the three weeks from the start date of your program.
Forms for adding your dependents are available at the HCSU office.
*Dependants refers to spouse or unmarried children under the age of 21 (25 years if regularly attending school) and solely dependent upon the member for support (common-law or same sex relationships are accepted).
